There are many summer programs that are available for minority children to attend.
There are numerous summer minority programs available for middle school and high school students across the country. Many of the programs are geared towards preparing the students for college and earning degrees in their field of interest. Students wishing to participate in a summer program often need to complete an application by a deadline.
Summer Medical and Dental Education Program
The Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) is open to minorities who are in their freshman or sophomore year in college. The program is designed to increase the number of minorities enrolled in medical schools across the country. Students can apply for acceptance into one of the eleven participating college campuses. Participating campuses include Yale University School of Medicine, University of Nebraska Medical Center and The University of Texas Dental Branch and Medical School at Houston. The curriculum for the summer program consists of a review of the basic sciences, pathology of diseases and a preview of pre-medicine sciences. Participants are taught skills to improve study habits and time management as well.

National Summer Transportation Institute
The National Summer Transportation Institute targets middle and high school minority students. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the NSTI program focuses on civil and transportation engineering. More than forty colleges participate in the program nationwide. Students live on-campus during the four-week program. Students must write an essay and submit an application to be considered for acceptance into the program.

Junior Engineering Technical Society
The Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) conducts a summer academy for minority students interested in engineering. Middle school and high school students are offered the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities, academic courses and team activities. Students are taught use applications they learn in real-life situations. The JETS program closely parallels the first-year of an engineering program in college. The program is held at eleven campuses across the country, including Xavier University and Morgan State University. Students must apply and be accepted to participate in the program. Scholarships are available to meet the cost of the tuition and fees for the program.
