Great Farewell Gifts

Great going-away gifts can be challenging to find.

When someone leaves, whether it's a friend, family member, or co-worker, it can be hard to know what gift to give them. Often, farewell gifts have a tendency to be too general or too sentimental. Some gifts are inappropriate or simply forgettable. But there are several options available that will help you choose just the right -- and appropriate -- gift.

Something Funny

Saying goodbye can be awkward and emotional. Humor is a great way to lighten the mood. Look for gifts that will make the recipient laugh and that will cause them to remember you whenever they see the gift. Some ideas include humorous books on a relevant subject (the person's new career or location), coffee mugs with funny sayings or wall calendars with funny facts or photos.

Something Personal

When someone you're close to, like a good friend or family member, is leaving, opt for a more personal gift that reflects your relationship. Photo albums or personal notes work well for this, as do gifts personalized with a custom message. Look for gifts that are directly relevant to a memory or experience you share, like a copy of a song you both love or a postcard from somewhere you vacationed together. Give something humorous the personal touch by referencing a personal joke or funny memory.

Something Practical

Another option is to give something practical. If the recipient is leaving the area, a guidebook on his new location might be appropriate. If he's leaving the country, try a language translation dictionary. For someone who is moving, or undertaking another large task, look for an organizer specific to that task. For someone changing careers or companies, a new mug or a desk calendar may be appropriate. Add a personal touch by having the gift personalized for the recipient.

Tips

Be aware of any allergies, sensitivities or cultural issues that may be present. Always be respectful and tactful in your gift choice. Think in advance about the gift-giving setting. Some gifts may not be appropriate in a large group environment.
