The Average Salary Of An Account Manager

Account managers spend a significant amount of time developing relationships with clients.


Within the media, advertising and marketing industries, account managers handle client accounts and act as a liaison between the customer and business. Their duties include everything from customer and technical support to account planning and relationship-building with the client. However, account managers are found across a variety of industries, including health care, non-profit and the government. A January 2011 PayScale report stated that account managers in the United States earned average salaries ranging between $38,453 and $63,965 annually.


Time Frame


Average salaries for account managers increase as they move through their careers and accumulate additional work experience. PayScale revealed that professionals with less than one year of experience fell within the average salary range of $29,945 to $41,785. In comparison, account managers with one to four years of experience earned salaries that fell within the $35,281 to $50,541 range. Workers with five to nine years of experience earned salaries that ranged from $41,653 to $61,777 per year. Account managers with 10 to 19 years of experience made annual wages of $45,120 to $72,768 per year. Professionals that had been working in the field for 10 years or more reported average salaries as high as $76,511 per year.


Location


Account managers working in different states reported varying average salaries compared with other locations based on the PayScale report. California professionals reported average salaries ranging between $42,032 and $66,053. Professionals working in Texas reported an average salary range of $37,308 to $56,758 per year. Account managers in New York earned average annual wages ranging between $41,982 and $67,749. Georgia professionals averaged salaries of $36,208 to $59,177. Account managers in Florida earned the lowest, averaging salaries ranging between $34,310 and $47,527 per year.


Industry


Account managers earn similar salaries as their counterparts in other industries. PayScale showed that while workers employed in health insurance firms made an average salary of $41,640 to $57,171, professionals in advertising agencies averaged annual wages from $35,432 to $56,756. Account managers working for IT firms reported average annual wages of $39,305 to as high as $79,707. However, their counterparts in marketing and media management firms only averaged salaries as high as $56,351.


Gender


Male account managers averaged annual salaries that were higher within both the 25th and 75th percentile of earners. According to PayScale, male account managers earned average salaries that ranged between $38,906 and $63,525 per year. In comparison, female account managers earned less, at $37,015 and $56,647 per year.
