Inexpensive Advertising Ideas

Advertising doesn't have to be expensive to be effective.

Some small business owners may shy away from advertising because of their perception of its high cost. While this may be true when it comes to purchasing media time on television or radio, advertising does not necessarily have to be expensive to be effective. By employing some cheap advertising methods, you can still reach large numbers of potential customers without going broke in the process.

Press Releases

Press releases are an excellent way to advertise a major event such as the grand opening of a business or the introduction of a new product, and they cost nothing to produce. A well-crafted press release will be short and direct and contain an attention-grabbing headline and a strong opening sentence to generate interest. Press releases should be sent to media outlets such as newspapers and radio stations.

Sponsor an Event

Sponsor a local charity event such as a 5K run for Special Olympics or a car wash to raise money for the March of Dimes. The event will generate publicity for your business, and your efforts will benefit a worthy cause. Give away free samples of your product if feasible, and co-sponsor the event with other businesses to limit costs.

Use the Internet

Set up a website to publicize your business. Participate in newsgroups and chat rooms that deal with your area of expertise and provide a link to your site and your email address in your salutation. You can also write a blog to establish yourself as an expert in your field. Include an order page on your site so that others can purchase your product or service.

Business Cards

Business cards are an easy and effective method of inexpensive advertising. An attractive card should contain your business name as well as a tag line that clearly identifies what you do. Contact information should include a telephone number, email address and website link. Hand the cards out to everyone you meet and post them in public places like bulletin boards in grocery stores and Laundromats.

Magnetic Signs

If you're frequently on the road, place magnetic signs on the doors of your car to act as a rolling advertisement. You can also place them on any public metal surface where the law allows. A major benefit of magnetic signs is that they can be moved wherever they are needed. You can even have extra ones made and pay a small fee to others to place them on their own cars for additional exposure.
