Influence People In 3 Steps

Influence People in 3 Steps

Learning influence someone to do something you want is easy if you know some of the principles of influence and persuasion that lots of people use (including me) to influence others everyday. The are several steps away...

Instructions

1. If you're trying to influence someone to do something then you can use the CONTRAST principle in order to persuade him that the thing you want him to do is...well nothing. You can do this by first asking for a bigger thing. For example, if you want to ask your friend for $50 then first ask for a larger amount of money that you're sure he's going to reject (let's say $200, just don't exaggerate, be realistic because otherwise this principle won't work) and then, after he says no you ask for the smaller amount. It's a win-win situation for you...if he agrees on the first request, you win more money.

2. Use the principle of social proof to move others to take action. Social proof means, if others are doing the same thing, then it means it is the right things to do. It is very powerful when people are uncertain. For example, if you want to persuade someone to donate money to charity tell them (or don't tell them directly, just somehow let them know) that, let's say, over 450 people currently agreed to donate today. The bigger the number, the better.

3. We all know that we are more influenced by people that we like. So why not be a person that is likable to other people? There is a book called "win friends and influence people" by Dale Carnegie that can help you in this. But if you're a lazy reader then knowing these principles would help: We like people that are similar to us, the more physically attractive the individual is, the more we like them (so grooming is important) and we like people who give us appreciations and compliments.

4. These are just some of the principles of persuasion I know from the BEST BOOK EVER on this topic from Robert Cialdini called "Influence." You have a link to his website in the resources section below.
