If you have at least a bachelor's degree in business administration with a focus on marketing, you might be a good candidate for a career as an advertising and promotions director. Jobs in promotion and advertising can be found all industries, including television, radio, newspapers, magazines, electronics and political organizations. Depending on your education, experience and industry, you might even make a six-figure salary.


Advertising and Promotions Managers


Another title for a director of advertising and promotion is "Advertising and Promotions Manager." This position comprises the same duties including market research, product development and sales, coordinating advertising and promotional strategies. In may of 2010, the mean hourly wage for industry professionals was $47.46 and $98,720 annually. The lowest 10th percentile of workers made $19.94 per hour and $41,480 annually, while the 75th percentile made $58.93 and $122,570 annually. The 50 percent median of advertising and promotion managers earned $40.33 per hour and $83,890 annually.


Industrial Variances


Advertising and promotions director salaries may vary considerably, depending on the industry in which they're involved. The highest-paying industry for promotions directors in 2010 was "Electrical and Electronic Goods Merchant Wholesalers," where professionals in this field earned a mean salary of $140,710 and $67.65 hourly, according to BLS. The lowest-paying industry recorded was "Beer, Wine, and Distilled Alcoholic Beverage Merchant Wholesalers," which yielded salaries closer to $82,870 per year and $39.84 hourly.


Regional Variances


BLS statistics also indicated some fluctuation in advertising and promotion salaries nationwide during the reporting period. Statistic show that salaries ranged anywhere between $20.38 per hour and $42,390 annually in nonmetropolitan areas of eastern Texas to $71.13 per hour and $147,950 annually in metropolitan divisions of New York. Some of the lowest-paying regions include Maine, Kansas and Tennessee, where earnings between $46,630 and $66,510 per year were reported. Higher-paying areas included Boston, San Francisco and New Jersey, in which professionals earned $122,050 to $142,840 per year.


Public Relations Specialists


Public relations specialists handle consumer, media, industry and government affairs. However, in most industries they also become closely involved in advertising and promotion activities such as press releases and brand and reputation management campaigns. BLS reports, that in 2010 the mean hourly wage for public relations specialists was $28.44 and $59,150 per year. The lowest 10th percentile earned $14.69 per hour and $30,560 per year, and the 75th percentile earned $34.53 and $71,820 per year. The 50 percent median of professional surveyed reported earning of $25.05 per hour and $52,090 annually.
