Advertise A Website

Make your website the topic of conversation.

The Internet is a vast ocean of information that can easily drown out your digital voice -- your website. Advertising your website effectively will help get your website to the surface of attention and your Web content to the top of people's minds. Both online and offline advertising methods used together will give you a dual platform for spreading the word. But there are ways to help ensure you're not just a mere advertiser, peddler or, even worse, a spammer. Following several basic guidelines will put your website in the best light.

Instructions

1. Lay the groundwork for a site that provides valuable and captivating content. Make your website content clear and concise, as most people scan Web pages rather than read them completely. Additionally, title your Web pages with rich keywords and few "filler words," such as "the" or "and." Use active language as much as possible. Search engines often index websites according to page headers. Also, know your audience and tailor your content to fit their interests and aptitudes. Satisfy them yet leave them with a desire for more.

2. Network offline. Put your website on everything -- stationary, business cards, vehicles, cups, T-shirts and anything else you can print on that's visible to others. Send regular news releases to local media outlets about what's new on your website. Place an ad with your website in business directories. Get creative. Imagine activities that people do everyday and create something that fits those activities on which you can put your website. For example, make bookmarks that have your website on them and donate them to your local bookstore.

3. Engage others online. Make a blog hosted on your Web server that promotes your web link and content. Use search engine optimization (SEO) techniques. Place trending key words in your online content and among your website page tags. Put your most important and relevant keywords in the first paragraphs of your websites pages and documents, and add hyperlinks to your keywords. Search engines look at these two factors especially when ranking online content. Furthermore, submit your website to online directories, such as on Google, Yahoo! and YellowPages.com (see links in Resources). Write articles containing your website address for other websites. Request reciprocal links from websites compatible with your online content. Above all, strive to provide meaningful interactions and content to people -- they often will listen.
