Become A Spokes Model

Halle Berry, Revlon spokes model

They are the faces you recognize from makeup advertisements, soda commercials and online ads. Spokes models are (usually) beautiful people who represent a company and rev up business. Part model, part public relations rep, a spokes model may be interviewed on camera to help market the company. If you’ve always wanted to be the next Halle Berry representing Revlon, or the next 7-Up guy, then read on for tips to make it happen.

Instructions

1. Love the product or cause that you want to represent. You wouldn’t make a good spokes model for PETA if you don’t like animals. Know the product’s attributes and benefits inside and out.

2. Befriend other spokes models. You may come across Cuervo girls at a bar or club, Lancome models at a beauty event at the mall, Audi representatives at a car show, or fitness models at a health expo. Chat with them about companies they have worked for, then register with those companies. Ask your spokes model friends if it’s okay to list them as references and referrals.

3. Develop a professional portfolio. If you know photographers, see if they'd be willing to take your pictures for free in exchange for the use of the photos in their portfolio. Search for photographers on sites such as Model Mayhem and Craigslist. When you have your photo shoot, wear natural makeup and make sure your eyebrows, nails and hair look great.

4. Apply with modeling agencies. Most will ask you to send or upload photos and your body stats, which you should be truthful about. Two of the best known spokes model agencies are Ford and Elite, but also apply for smaller and local agencies to improve your chances of getting a job.

5. Look for spokes modeling jobs on your own. Job listings are posted on many model web sites, such as OneTalentSource.

6. Be well-spoken. Companies want spokes models who can represent them verbally as well as visually.

7. Be prepared for a long-term commitment. You may need to sign a contract that you’ll serve a certain length of time as a spokes model. Your presence may be required at photo shoots, televised shows, fundraisers, concerts and other events.
