While there are no special qualifications required to obtain a position as a hotel manager, many do posses a degree in hospitality services or business administration. Hotel managers are also in charge of personnel. While large hotels may have a human resources department or another person in charge of workers, the hotel manager is still the person who recruits and approves new staff members, as well as monitoring, training and planning work schedules.

Hotel managers may have other obligations depending on the type of hotel. Those who work at resort hotels will have to supervise the proper functioning of golf courses, spas and swimming pools. Those who are employed at an extended-stay hotel have to make sure the fully equipped kitchens contained within the apartments work properly and the equipment in the fitness center is up-to-date and in optimal condition.
