Valentine Window Display Ideas

Valentine Window Display Ideas

A great window display for Valentine's Day can draw customers into your store and highlight holiday specials. Keep in mind some basic principles of artistic design when planning your Valentine window displays: limit the palette and do not crowd too many display items into one window. Most importantly, create a visual mood of romance, fun and excitement for this lovers' holiday, and express your store's style and brand in the window design.

Colors

It may seem obvious to design a Valentine's Day window display in shades of pink and red. While that will draw attention and highlight the holiday, you should try introducing a complementary color like orange, silver, purple or green. Do the unexpected so shoppers are not overloaded with pink and red. A classy, upscale Valentine's display idea would be to use a mostly silver or white background with a few featured pink and red items. Or make your main color pink with orange or green design elements to give a bright, fun mood. If you want to create a highly sensual, romantic display, use all deep reds with black in your window design.

Placement

Angle the items you want passersby to see first toward the sidewalk, and put Valentine's specials in windows leading toward the entry to your business. Use spot lighting to accent especially reflective items such as glass, metal or mirrored surfaces, to maximize light in the display and make the small space seem roomier. Drape fabric in your Valentine's Day palette over display forms and holders to disguise potentially ugly containers, or use specially-chosen Valentine's display bases, such as colored baskets, acrylic heart stands or wire-framed red paper boxes. Do not forget to use the ceiling space in your window display; highlight your offerings with a string of pink paper lanterns, or staple swags of soft fabric onto either side of the top of the display for a valance-style look.

Arrangement

Be sure to leave empty space in your Valentine's window display. Avoid overloading shoppers visually, so that they can see and appreciate the specific items displayed. Try placing a mannequin or other tall element in the back center of the window, then flank it with two other large elements on either side in front, making a triangle shape. Let the colors and lighting be the rest of the display, saving smaller details for in-store displays.

Style

Combine your Valentine's Day merchandise with unexpected design elements. You could use metal or wooden fencing in the display, suggesting the arrival of spring, or you could use antique chairs and small tables to display treasures in your color scheme. Stick to the feeling of your store, whether it is quaint, modern, offbeat, or elegant. Use blank window frames or picture frames for background elements, or go on a scavenger hunt for natural elements like rocks, branches and flowers to accompany your display.
