The Average Salary Of Internet Marketers

Internet marketers are paid to drive online sales through their marketing efforts.

Because of the Internet, companies have had to increasingly turn towards professional Internet marketers to promote and advertise their businesses. Professional Internet marketers are sales managers who specialize in eCommerce, or the generation of revenue through online sales. Salaries for these eCommerce directors can vary based on industry and performance, but they can often exceed the six-figure salary mark.

Average Salary

The average salary for sales managers working in the wholesale electronics market was $133,840 per year, as of May 2010, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This salary was significantly higher than the average salary for all sales managers in all industries nationwide who made $114,110 per year, by comparison. Based on the executive search firm Crandall and Associates' report, InternetRetailer.com indicates that eCommerce directors made an average salary of $125,900 per year, as of April 2010. This was up significantly from the 2009 average of $105,900 per year.

Pay Scale

Placing the salary of Internet marketers within the larger pay scale for sales managers nationwide provides some additional context. Sales managers made salaries ranging from approximately $50,000 per year to $166,000 per year, as of 2010, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The median salary for sales managers was $98,530, with the middle 50 percent earning between $67,570 and $143,770 on an annual basis.

Experience

Experience seems to play a role in how much an eCommerce director can expect to make. InternetRetailer.com reports that starting eCommerce directors typically make $85,200 to $97,600 per year, as of 2010. Those who work for four to seven years in the business can make between $101,700 and $128,400, while those with more than seven years of experience generally earn a salary range from $145,300 to $167,200 on an annual basis. Also notable were email marketing managers who earned $73,500 per year, website managers at $73,400, search analysts who brought in $66,500 per year and web developers who earned $85,300 on an annual basis.

Job Outlook

The job outlook for those working in the Internet marketing field appears to be favorable, based on Bureau of Labor Statistics projections regarding sales manager jobs from 2008 to 2018. According to the BLS, the number of jobs in sales management will grow by a faster than average rate of 15 percent during this time frame. The top job opportunities will be in areas such as eCommerce as businesses become increasingly reliant upon the Internet for sales marketing efforts.
