Select The Best Roof Shingle

Shingles are one of the most important elements of a safe and sturdy home. Not only are they extremely visible to passersby, they are also the primary protectant from rain, sleet and snow. If you have poor shingles, roof leaks can lead to rot and mold, which quickly deteriorate the home. While it is important to make sure the look of your roof compliments the rest of your home (and even the rest of your neighborhood), visual elements should only be a small consideration. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Think about the weather patterns where you live. Organic asphalt shingles are the most common shingles, but they can warp in wet, humid climates. Fiberglass shingles do well in humid climates, and are much less flammable, but they are also less flexible, which is a concern if you live in a windy area.

2. Consider purchasing shingles that have an algae resistance coating if you live in a humid area. Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Alabama residents should seriously consider this option, which typically includes a warranty.

3. Check the packaging label of your shingles to make sure they are compliant. Organic shingles should say they are ASTM D-225 compliant. Fiberglass shingles should say they are ASTM D-3462 compliant.

4. Ask about the warranty. Quality roof shingles will have a 20- or 30-year warranty. Three-tab and laminated shingles often have even longer guarantees.
