Facts On Uganda'S Tourism

Facts on Uganda's Tourism

The Republic of Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa and home to one of the richest ecosystems on the continent. Tourists who make the long journey are rewarded with unparalleled opportunities to view the natural world.

History

Tourism in Uganda started in earnest during the 1950's. Shut down by the reign of Idi Amin during the early 1970's, it slowly began to regain its footing as a major economical force in the country.

Visitors

The tourist industry in Uganda welcomes over 100,000 visitors each year on average. Close to half of all tourists are residents of Kenya.

Eastern Gorillas

Uganda is one of only three countries where it is possible to view the Eastern Gorilla and its subspecies. There are presently two acknowledged subspecies: the Eastern Lowland Gorilla and the Mountain Gorilla.

National Parks

There are eleven major national parks in Uganda. The most popular are Bwindi Impenetrable NP, Magahinga NP, Queen Elizabeth NP and Rwenzori Mountains NP.

Security

External and internal security threats occasionally disrupt the tourism industry. Due to ongoing unrest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, there are sometimes border conflicts that have resulted in the death of tourists.
