A resort marketing coordinator is someone who handles the promotional aspects of a lodge, inn or hotel. Resort marketing managers oversee brochures, websites and other forms of advertising--all aimed at bringing guests to their place of business. They send out press releases and create a resort motto, working with the lodging managers to try to make customers believe they would never want to stay anywhere else.

Resort marketing coordinators help develop strategies on promote their resort. They find innovative ways to promote weekend packages, activities and restaurants near the resort, and the comfort or "elegance" or the various rooms. Resort marketing coordinators do this by getting the word out and putting a positive spin on their lodge through various forms of media. Often, they oversee the graphics department for use of logos on letterhead or newsletters--or even design the artwork themselves.

Resort marketing coordinators need to be highly creative with outstanding written and oral communication skills. They should be organized, motivated, energetic, professional and courteous. They also must be well aware of what the competition is doing, analyzing trends and putting their research to good use. On top of those things, resort marketing managers should be experts in various forms of advertising, and fit the cost of promoting their lodge into a budget.


Background


Most resorts favor applicants with a bachelor's degree or previous marketing experience in another industry when hiring a marketing coordinator of their own. Areas of study for those interested in resort marketing typically include advertising, hotel management, business, communications, public relations and, of course, marketing. Occasionally, resort marketing coordinators hold other positions within the resort, such as sales or general manager.


Prospects


Opportunities for resort marketing coordinators should be solid through at least the next decade. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for marketing managers in general are expected to grow by 13 percent from 2008 to 2018. Also, the BLS reported that employment of lodging managers will increase by about 5 percent during the same span.


Earnings


PayScale.com reported that hotel marketing coordinators earned a median salary of $74,292 per year in April 2010. Meanwhile, marketing coordinators in general earned an annual salary of anywhere from $32,000 to more than $45,000, according to PayScale.com. So basically, the wages for resort marketing coordinators are likely to be based on the type of establishment for which they work, as well as their overall responsibilities and experience.
