What Is A Magic Jack

A Magic Jack is the name of a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) device. The device works with a computer that has high speed internet access. For a low annual fee, it offers unlimited calling in the U.S. and Canada.

History

The Magic Jack was created by Dan Borislow. He is also the founder of YMAX Communications Corporation.

Function

To use the Magic Jack device, first plug your standard phone into the Magic Jack, then plug the Magic Jack into a USB port on your computer. You will then be directed to follow download instructions on the computer screen.

Features

The Magic Jack offers the following services for free: caller ID, voicemail, call forwarding, call waiting, directory assistance and your own phone number. According to pcmag.com, you can also make international calls for an additional fee.

Significance

The use of the Magic Jack allows for unlimited local and long distance calling without monthly telephone bills.

Consideration

To make or receive phone calls, your computer must be on; it cannot be on standby mode or hibernating. Calls, at that time, will be directed to voicemail.

Warning

According to pcmag.com, the Magic Jack is lacking in tech support. Although Magic Jack performs well in the website's labs, researchers find it difficult to recommend the product to nontechnical consumers.
