Testing Internet skills is an important way to evaluate the abilities of a prospective employee or other person to work and learn in an online environment. An individual with minimal skills will need instruction in order to efficiently work online and perform such tasks as posting comments or replying to email. A person with high Internet skills is already able to do these basic things and will also be able to develop new skills on their own. You can assess a person's Internet skills and determine their level of online proficiency with a few easy tests.
Instructions
1. Ask the person to check an email account. You'll be able to easily assess whether he is able to log in and use a password. Then ask him to send you an email. Ask for a second email, but this time ask that an attachment be included. These tasks will be good indicators of the person's proficiency at using email.
2. Give the person a list of website addresses and ask her to view those pages in a browser. Then, give her a list of well-known businesses or corporations, like CNN, Yahoo, or Target, and ask her to use a search engine to look up the URLs for those websites. This tests the person's proficiency at using a browser as well as being able to perform a simple search engine query.
3. Ask the person to use an online search engine to find the answer to some question. It can be any question, but it should be something the person can't answer off the top of his head. This is a further test of the person's ability to use effectively use a search engines to perform more complex research and find answers online.
4. Ask the person to visit a blog and, once there, post a comment. This tests her ability to use blogs and commenting as communication.
5. Ask the person to create a profile on a social network such as Facebook or MySpace. This is not only a test of the individual's ability to complete and submit an online form but it also provides an opportunity to learn navigate a more complex online environment.
